Parabens are the most widely used preservatives in cosmetics and personal care products such as soap, moisturizers,
shaving cream and underarm deodorant, according to the Food and Drug Administration. To get a bit science-y, parabens are esters
(a compound formed from acid and alcohol) of p-hydroxybenzoic acid. The FDA says the most common are methylparaben, propylparaben
and butylparaben.
Companies use parabens to extend the shelf life of products and prevent growth of bacteria and fungi in, for instance, face cream.
But some think that parabens may be linked to breast and some other cancer types and fertility issues.
In the 1990s, parabens were deemed xenoestrogens―agents that mimic estrogen in the body. “Estrogen disruption” has been linked
to breast cancer and reproductive issues.
And in 2004 British cancer researcher Philippa Darbre, Ph.D., found parabens present in malignant breast tumors. As a result,
experts in many countries are recommending limits on paraben levels in cosmetic products. What’s more, watchdog organizations
worry that if parabens can be stored in the body, over time they could have a cumulative effect and pose a health risk.
